Old art: 2004-05

Time for the kickoff! I think I’ll start with my art since I’m fairly sure I can post it without breaking something.

I’ve got 1,793 objects in my Images folder and a lot of it is really old and they all bring back memories, some of them embarrassing. Let’s learn all about them!

This was part of trainwreck that was my first webcomic: “Planet Barhug.” I still have all the comics from that in a zipfile somewhere, which I will spare you. I had just learned how to use 3d modeling software as part of a 2-week class, and was fascinated. I found Wings3d and discovered that I could pretty easily make some semblance of a comic by taking screenshots of smooth models and putting them in mspaint.

And that’s what this is, though I’m not sure how I used it – It may have been a single comic, or one of the characters might have had such a magazine.

Then I traded Wings3d for Blender. Here’s an early Furato:

Check out that anti-anti-aliasing.

So in April of 2005 I found the Daily Sketch Group at CGSociety. I can’t remember how. But for a good year or two I hung around there, made a fool of myself multiple times, and learned quite a bit about art. Here was my first entry, topic 312: “Animals as humans.”

Insert clever rap.

Lizards showed up (and continue to show up) in a lot of what I draw. Probably my best 3d scene, which once again includes my zero-experience depiction of a party:

They are all doing the robot.

In late 2005 I began my nervous venture into the land of DeviantArt.  One little project was looking at random Apophysis fractals and making creatures/animals/whatever out of their shapes. A little bit like “That cloud looks like a…”

Like the fractal, I played around with all kinds of ways to make art. Notepad!

Furato was originally invented for the Miguzi Monsterpiece contest. Miguzi was an afternoon block on Cartoon Network. The winner got their creation modeled and used in the little commercials.

And on New Year’s eve:

That’s all for 2005, at least according to “Date created” in my images folder.  Stay tuned for more!
